JCHS offers a range of specialized electives that inspire creativity and curiosity, helping students discover potential careers for the future. Among these exceptional offerings, the CPR elective stands out as a unique opportunity. In this course, students learn about heart function and the critical skills needed to save lives. They practice CPR techniques by mimicking procedures on mannequins, gaining hands-on experience that is vital in emergency situations.
CPR is an essential skill that can save countless lives, yet the likelihood of a bystander knowing how to perform it during a cardiac arrest is unfortunately low. The CPR elective not only raises awareness and provides education but also significantly increases the chances of survival in cardiac arrest situations. In fact, individuals who experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrest often receive help from bystanders before emergency services arrive.
Despite the increased awareness of CPR, many bystanders hesitate to act due to a lack of training or fear of making mistakes. Therefore, it is imperative that students who participate in the CPR elective earn CPR certification at the end of the course. This certification is not only an impressive addition to college applications but also adds value for candidates seeking jobs such as camp counseling and babysitting. Additionally, CPR certification is mandatory for careers like medicine and lifeguarding.
Even if CPR is not part of your future plans, this elective is a worthwhile consideration. Knowing how to perform CPR is crucial for saving lives and can significantly improve the survival chances of those experiencing out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
