Top five players in the tournament - “All tournament Player”
Our journey to the annual Shalhevet Globerman Tournament in Los Angeles was one we had eagerly anticipated. We started bright and early, arriving at the airport at 5 a.m. After passing through security, we gathered as a team to pray, thinking of the soldiers in the IDF and others who inspire our strength. After a six-hour flight, we landed in L.A., full of excitement and ready to face our competition. Our first stop was the renowned Joe’s Burger, famous for some of the best kosher burgers around. Some of us even branched out to try sushi—keeping it fresh in more ways than one!
Our first game was against Flatbush. It was intense, filled with excitement and a few frustrating calls. We were down by one, with Orel Nahmani at the free-throw line and a chance to tie the game. Unfortunately, the shot didn’t land, and we lost by a single point. That night, we enjoyed a Mexican dinner, though it wasn’t without its challenges—Jimmy fell ill and missed our next game against YULA. Despite our best efforts, we couldn’t secure a win.
However, after the tough start in the previous games, we came together in our next match against Akiva Yavneh and played our hearts out. This time, our hard work paid off—we took the victory and celebrated our teamwork and dedication. That win lifted our spirits and reminded us of what we were capable of.
After the game, Shabbat gave us a chance to refocus. We came together in prayer, celebrated with an Oneg, and shared laughs and stories. Our spirits were lifted, and by the time we gathered for Havdalah, we had grown closer as a team and as friends.
One of the highlights of the weekend came at the awards ceremony on Saturday night, where Jonathan Hazan was named one of the top five players in the tournament, earning the title of "All-Tournament Player." This remarkable honor reflects Jonathan's outstanding performance on the court and his leadership off it. The entire school is incredibly proud of him for bringing this prestigious recognition home.
As we boarded the plane back to Miami, it wasn’t just the competition or the games that stayed with us—it was the lessons we had learned along the way. In sports, as in life, victories are sweet, but it’s the challenges that truly shape us. Each game and each setback taught us more about resilience, perseverance, and the power of supporting one another. On our final day, we watched the closing matches, reflecting on all we had gained from the experience. While we didn’t bring home a banner, we returned with cherished memories, strengthened friendships, and valuable lessons. Jonathan’s remarkable accomplishment inspired us all, and we’re excited to build on this foundation as we strive for even greater success at the next tournament. Here’s to another shot next year!
